Frank Allart Cremone Bolt Guide

fa-cremone.jpgFrank Allart cremone bolts are the highest quality cremone bolts available. They are made to the top standards in England. Frank Allart offers an extensive array of patterns, finishes, and options. Numerous desired looks and styles can be achieved with Frank Allart. Using rectangular shoots, or rods, Frank Allart cremones function with less friction than other brands, providing the most comfort and ease in their use. The lead time is 8 weeks for cremone bolts to be made to your specifications in England and shipped from Philadelphia.

One- or Two-Sided Operation

Frank Allart cremone bolts are available with either single-sided or dual-sided function. Single-sided cremone bolts are mounted to one face of the door or window. Single-sided function many be preferred for casement windows, closets, pantries, cabinets, and other doors that are typically only accessed from one side. Dual-sided cremone bolts have the cremone casing with rods mounted to one side of a door and trim with a knob or lever mounted to the opposite side of the door, referred to as the exterior trim. A small hole bored through the door allows the exterior trim to connect to the cremone casing so that the cremone can be operated from either side of the door. Two-sided operation may be optimal for entry doors, bedrooms, bathrooms, balconies, studies, and other doors that are used from both sides.

Keyed, Thumbturn Locking, or Non-Locking

Cremone bolts do not automatically latch behind you when you walk through a door like a standard passage set might. To secure the door, the knob or lever must be turned. To open a door that is latched by a cremone bolt, you must turn the knob or lever. Frank Allart offers keyed cremone bolts that lock with a key from the outside, cremone bolts with thurmburns that lock via turning a thumbturn on the inside, and cremone bolts that do not lock.

Two of the Frank Allart keyed cremone bolts have the keyholes on the exterior trim, with a thumbturn on the cremone casing. One Frank Allart cremone bolt, the 0836, uses a skeleton key on both sides of the door. The 0836 is the only cremone bolt that is available with one-sided operation and a key. Keyed cremone bolts may be preferred for entry doors and studies, closets, and other doors that must be locked some of the time from the outside.

Cremone bolts with a thumbturn on the cremone casing can be locked from the inside using the thumbturn. Thumbturn locking cremone bolts may be preferred for bathrooms, balconies, bedrooms, and doors that must be locked some of the time from the inside.

Non-locking cremone bolts still open and close (latch and unlatch). With no thumbturn or keyway, cremone bolts can always be used from either side. These cremones may be preferred for hallway doors, walk-in closets, children's bedrooms, and other doors that are never locked.

Non-Functioning Decorative

Any Frank Allart cremone bolt can be used for decorative purposes. Non-functioning cremone bolts do not have moving parts. The knob or lever will not rotate, and the rods will not extend or retract. Decorative cremone bolts can be a wonderful addition to any room.

Sizing

Frank Allart cremone bolts are available in any size. They are made to fit the height you need. When ordering, we ask you to specify the retracted height, which is the distance between the top and bottom strike plates. Knob or lever height is also fully customizable. For doors, our most common request is for a knob or lever height of 36", but the choice is yours. We ask you to specify knob or lever height when ordering. See measuring diagram.

Handing

When ordering some cremone bolts or levers, handing is required. Handing for Frank Allart cremone bolts is not found in the same way as typical American handing. To determine handing, face the side of the door that the cremone bolt will be mounted to and locate the hinges. If the hinges are on the left side, this is a left hand door. If the hinges are on the right side, this is a right hand door.

Included Parts

Most Frank Allart cremone bolts include 4 rod guides. The 0801, 0870, and 0871 each include 2 rod guides. Cremone bolts include 2 flat strikes (commonly called mortise strikes in the USA), 2 angle strikes, 1 universal strike, and 2 staples. The 0801, 0870, and 0871 cremones also include 2 additional end guides. Cremone bolts include matching screws. By default, wood screws are included. For metal windows and doors, woods screws can optionally be substituted for machine screws.
