What Size V-Shaped Weatherstrip Should I Use On My Double Hung Window?

On double hung windows that have operable top and bottom sashes, V-Shaped Weatherstrip should be used on each side of the parting bead. The parting bead is located on the window jamb, which includes the left and right sides of the window. It is the wooden piece on each jamb that runs vertically between the top and bottom sashes. To determine what size V-Shaped Weatherstrip to use on each side of the parting bead, measure the space between the parting bead and the edge of the sash pulley or tape balance being used to hold the sash.

If this space measures 5/8" wide or more, use the 5/8" Wide V-Shaped Weatherstrip.
If this space measures between 1/2" and 5/8" wide, use the 1/2" Wide V-Shaped Weatherstrip.
If this space measures less than 1/2" wide, use the Pro-Type Spring Bronze Weatherstrip instead.

How Do I Install V-Shaped Weatherstrip?

V-Shaped Weatherstrip is installed with the longer segment of the V flat to the door or window jamb. The weatherstrip should be positioned so that the V opens towards the door stop, window stop, or parting bead. The V-Shaped Weatherstrip should be placed so that the longer leg is just touching the door stop, window stop, or parting bead.

With the weatherstrip in position, nail every 1.5" along the length of the spring bronze. Nails should be placed in the longer segment of the V as close to the edge of the weatherstrip as possible, about 3/32" away from the edge. The nails will be right next to the door stop, window stop, or parting bead. The weatherstrip nails we sell are strong enough to go straight through the spring bronze. For vertical segments, you should start nailing from the top and work your way down to the bottom.

At any corners, the ends of the vertical and horizontal pieces of weatherstrip can be cut at 45 degree angles so that they meet nicely but do not bind with each other. Scissors or tin snips can be used to cut the weatherstrip. The weatherstrip can be pieced at the hinges if necessary. If there is a lock on the door, piece the weatherstrip around the strikeplate and use a lock strip to weatherstrip there.
